Geographical Modifiers

This term refers to the use of a location in the text on your page to help with on-page optimization. An example of this is marketing in Michigan instead of just using the word marketing.

This is online software that helps with keyword research when creating your Google AdWords campaign.

Note: The estimate of visits for keyword phrases is inaccurate and should not be trusted but the Google Ad Planner is a good resource for getting other long-tail keyword phrase ideas when you are doing keyword research.

Google AdSense

This is a service that you can sign up with Google to display ads on your website and whenever anyone sees, clicks, or performs an action from the ad on your website you get paid from Google.

Google AdWords

Google AdWords is a paid advertising platform to display your ad alongside organic search results.

Google Analytics

An analytics program that details how website visitors interact with your website. Google purchased analytics software from a company that used to charge people $300/per month. After releasing it free to the public their servers crashed from the amount of traffic they received so it was put on hiatus until they upgraded their servers then re-released as a free product.

Google Analytics Goals

In Google Analytics you can set up goals to test the success of your work. As an example of a goal, you can set up Google Analytics to track how many people sign up for your newsletter after reading a page on your website. That way you can measure the effectiveness of the pages that link to signing up for your newsletter and know which page is doing the best job of getting you leads of signing up for your newsletter.

Google Bomb

The art of using a specific keyword phrase to link to a website from many websites online so that that particular website will rank for that obscure keyword phrase. Once this was discovered by Google, Google tweaked this algorithm so ranking a website this way makes it harder. The phrase “miserable failure” was used to show George W. Bush being in the search engine results then later on it was used on Trump.

Google Business Profile

Formerly known as Google My Business, Google Business Profile is where you can claim or create or business online with Google to be included in its SERPs (search engine results pages) and Google Maps. You can find Google Business Profile here.

Google My Business Listing

Before Google was called Google Business Profile it was called Google My Business where you can verify or create or business to display on Google. You can find Google Business Profile here.

Googlebot

Google Dance

This is a phrase that digital marketers created to describe the jumping of rankings when an algorithm change is being made. If you notice a wild change in rankings then they go back to normal after a day or two then you will know that Google is testing out a new algorithm for ranking websites and seeing the results.

Google Hummingbird Update

A major algorithm change at Google concentrated on semantic search instead of direct keyword phrases in searches.

Google Panda Update

A major algorithm change at Google concentrated on high-quality vs. low-quality content on a website.

Google Penguin Update

Google initiated the penguin update in 2012 as a way to fight web spam. Now the Penguin update is a part of the core algorithm of Google.

Google Pigeon Update

A major algorithm change at Google concentrated on improving local searches.

Google RankBrain Update

A major algorithm change at Google that first utilized using machine learning in its algorithm to help improve the relevance of searches made.

Google Sandbox

The proposed suggestion is that there is a time frame that Google uses to ‘test’ a website before the full effects of optimization are taken into consideration. Google never confirmed that this existed.

The Google Tag Manager is a way to track multiple websites using code. This code can be added if you have a Google AdWords account to help track things.

This is a document released by Google that goes over the good and bad practices of website optimization that can be used to improve your website’s visibility online.

.gov Links

The domain extension .gov is a highly sought-after link that digital markets want to get as a backlink for the website that they are working on. According to Matt Cutts of Google, the extension has nothing to do with helping you rank because the websites that use this domain extension are naturally of high authority and value by themselves.

Gray Hat

Black hat techniques are very questionable tactics used to get you ranked that can get you penalized. White hat techniques are good techniques you can use to get yourself ranked without any worry of getting penalized. Gray hat techniques lie somewhere between the two.

Guest Blogging

Guest blogging is a way to get backlinks to your website by writing articles on other websites that link back to your website.

Guest Posting

Guest posting is the same as guest blogging where you write an article on someone else’s website that links back to yours.
